Douglas County Community & Senior Center Completion
Date: June 16, 2022
Author: Kevin Kemner, Managing Principal, TSK Reno-Tahoe
Over the past decade, TSK has had the profound opportunity of working with Douglas County (NV) and Douglas County Community Services, Parks and Recreation (DCCS) on several projects that contribute to the needs of the county’s citizenry.
Evoking a variety of rich architectural details found throughout Douglas County, the community and senior care center identifies itself appropriately in its surroundings. The facility serves a unique agricultural community at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Developed as a design-build competition, the CORE+TSK team evolved the previous bridging documents into a concept that addressed local agrarian precedents and historic details in an otherwise contemporary response.
Small details such as the building signage is familiar to the Butter Building, while large gestures such as the gymnasium roof appears similar to many of the barns found on family farms. Details of the points of entry and building articulation are similar to that of the C.V.I.C. building. Clerestory windows and office spaces protrude from the building mass and reflect the historic flourmill, while the massive cylindrical metal elements on the gymnasium pay homage to the easily recognizable historic grain silos along the community’s main street. In keeping with the spirit of “Main Street,” the building organizes around a central interior corridor that features a variety of services for visitors. Through a series of collaborative meetings with the County, the final solution provides for a collective environment that will serve local residents for generations to come.
Since its completion, DCCS has continued to improve the programs and opportunities offered through the center. This past year, DCCS completed the construction of a TSK designed indoor climbing center known as Badger Mountain, so named due to an animated badger that surprises unwary climbers. With the opening of Badger Mountain, DCCS’ vision for the Douglas County Community & Senior Center Completion is now complete. TSK is fortunate to have supported Douglas County Community Services, Parks and Recreation effort to improve its community and celebrate DCCS’ accomplishment. We also celebrate TSK Reno staff Pat Pusich and Mark Benzing for their role in making this project a success.
